South African civilians have more than six times as many firearms as those held by the police and army, according to research on guns and illegal firearms in nine southern African countries. South African civilians own 3.7 million firearms, while the police and the army have 567,000, said the study conducted by lobby group Gun Free SA and the Centre for Conflict Resolution. Illegal firearms proliferated mainly through theft from licensed owners, the study found.... (GunPolicy.org)
