The fatal shooting of a Clark County sheriff sergeant's 10-year-old daughter prompted a national law-enforcement accreditation group to adopt new guidelines for how police officers store their duty weapons. After the Jan. 13, 2003 shooting, which was ruled accidental, Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas adopted a department policy requiring off-duty officers to lock up their duty weapons and supplied 200 officers with pistol lock boxes.
