There's no one answer for easing gun violence in Detroit, but getting a better grip on the flow of illegal guns is a start.
Most of the weapons involved in crimes in Detroit — and around the nation — are not, themselves, illegal. Legal guns are often purchased or obtained illegally, sometimes by straw purchasers who then sell the guns to criminals who, legally, can't own guns.
So yes, Congress ought to extend its ban on certain military-style assault rifles. But... (GunPolicy.org)
