Percentage of Adults Living in a Home With a Gun
Definition and Selection Criteria
In a given jurisdiction the number of firearms held by civilians could have risen, while in the same period the proportion of households containing firearms might have fallen, or vice versa.
Counting the percentage of adults living in a household with one or more firearms may reveal trends in which existing gun owners acquire more or fewer guns, while at the same time a decreasing or increasing proportion of households contain firearms.
These results are from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the world's largest telephone survey sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of January 2014, responses to BRFSS questions on the household prevalence of firearms were only available for 2001, 2002 and 2004. See: Miller, Barber et al, 20131].
