Australia has in place some of the most stringent firearms laws in the world.

In Australia's federal system of government, the six State and two Territory governments have direct legislative responsibility for the control of firearms (including the possession, ownership, use, production and domestic transfer of firearms, their parts, accessories and ammunition).

The Australian Government is responsible for controlling the import, export and transit of firearms, their parts, accessories and ammunition.
