It is estimated that there are a total of 30,000 licenced civilian firearm owners in Malawi,(9) in other words a quarter of a percent of the total Malawi population are legal firearm owners.

According to the Malawi Police Service, between 1996 and 2003, 2 061 licences were issued to civilians for shotguns and rifles. No figures were available for the year 2000 (see Table 3.1 below).

There was no information available about the licensing of civilian-held handguns for this period.
