Guns in Vehicles in Wisconsin
Wisconsin generally prohibits the transportation of a long gun:
- In or on an automobile, unless the long gun is unloaded or the automobile is stationary.
- In or on an all-terrain vehicle, unless the long gun is unloaded or the vehicle is stationary.
- In or on an aircraft, unless the long gun is unloaded and enclosed in a carrying case.
- In or on a motorboat with the motor running, unless the long gun is unloaded.
These provisions are subject to several exceptions, including for sport shooting and use exclusively on private property. A 2011 Wisconsin law removed the requirement that an unloaded long gun carried in a regular or all-terrain vehicle be enclosed in a case, and allows any firearm to be carried in a vehicle that is not moving.
Handguns are prohibited only on commercial aircraft, where they are allowed if they are unloaded and encased.
Under Wisconsin's 2011 law allowing licensees to carry concealed weapons, an employer may not prohibit a licensee, as a condition of employment, from carrying or storing a concealed weapon, a particular type of concealed weapon, or ammunition in the licensee's own motor vehicle, regardless of whether the motor vehicle is used in the course of employment or whether the motor vehicle is driven or parked on property used by the employer…
