As it has been stated in the previous report, Italy has fully approved the UN Protocols against organized transnational crime with the ratification Law N. 146 on 16th March 2006, as they have been adopted by the UN General Assembly on 15th November 2000 and 31st May 2001.

Therefore, the provisions under section 15 of the ratification law have been immediately enforced, as regards the compulsory period for the maintenance of registers on the daily activity of weapons factories and shops, according to article 35: while in the past the registers were to be kept for 5 years, now it has been determined a period of 10 years…

In December 2009 a computerized system, named SPACE, was introduced. When fully operational it will make it possible to trace electronically every firearm bound for the civil market, manufactured, imported, exported or held by Italian companies or nationals.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior is constantly in touch with the territorial branches dealing with weapons. It replies to related-issues and it grants the authorization for weapons export to the countries subject to the European Code of Conduct.

Additionally, the Ministry of the Interior constantly cooperates with the Judiciary and Police Forces regarding any problem linked to the identification and traceability of weapons; they are also competent for the coordination of the Provincial Public Security Authorities that issues licences to carry weapons.
