El análisis de las cifras registradas por el Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, INMLCF, indica que después de la reducción sostenida que el fenómeno del homicidio venía presentando desde el año 2005 en el país, durante el año 2009 se registró un considerable incremento en los homicidios al pasar de 15.250 casos en el 2008 a 17.717 casos en el 2009.

Para el 2009 el principal mecanismo causal de homicidios en el país, tanto para mujeres como para hombres, sigue siendo el proyectil de arma de fuego con un 78,18% equivalente a 13.851 (según el sexo, 12.877 hombres y 949 mujeres).

The data collected by the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Science, shows that after the maintained decrease in the homicide phenomenon shown in the country since 2005, a substantial increase in homicides occurred in 2009, going from 15,250 cases in 2008 to 17,717 cases in 2009.

In 2009, firearms were the most common method used to commit a homicide, that is, 78.18% of the total (both men and women).

From the 13,851 homicides committed with a firearm, 12,877 were men and 949 women.
