National Report 2003 - Registro (Informe Nacional 2003 - Registro)

[Translation by GunPolicy.org]

Costa Rica produces no weapons of any kind and the Arms and Explosives Act expressly prohibits the manufacture of military material.

The current procedure for weapons registration is that the owner of a firearm must register it with the Arms and Explosives Control Department and must pass a theoretical and practical test on the handling of firearms to determine his/her fitness to possess a weapon.

It should be stressed that there is only one register for all weapons in the possession of private persons, so that all information relating to weapons registrations and carrying permits is centralised.
