Collection and Destruction

28,285 weapons were destroyed in Zeleznik, Serbia on 7 December.

The Serbian Ministry of the Interior organised the destruction with support from SEESAC [South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons].

The European Union funded the event as part of their 'Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition'.

The objectives of this strategy include supporting states in "the reduction of stocks to levels consistent with countries' legitimate security needs".

Cooperation between the Ministry of the Interior and SEESAC resulted in the disposal of 27,000 weapons in 2009.
