In order to manufacture and sell hunting guns, a factory or a gun shop must receive a licence from the prefectural governor. As of late 2001, 586 factories and 705 gun shops were licensed. In 2001, 156,072 hunting guns were manufactured and 156,704 (¥6,845 million) were sold. Also 155,671 guns (¥6,734 million) were sold as exports, accounting for 99.3% of total sales.
