Home Office Letter - Domestic Violence Issues

Domestic violence issues are already built into the firearm and shotgun certificate licensing process. The purpose of firearms control is to prevent firearms becoming a risk to public safety, and a key part of this is ensuring that they are possessed only by fitted people.

Before granting a certificate the police will carefully consider an applicant's suitability to be entrusted with a firearm or shotgun. They will consider an applicant's suitability, including reports of domestic violence. The police will also interview the applicant in their own home, which can elicit further evidence of their fitness.

The Government believes that these measures taken together present a substantial effort to reduce the numbers of people affected by guns.
