In response to the 2006 coup d'état, Australia and New Zealand imposed restrictions on the export of arms and ammunition to Fiji, and other states have followed suit by refusing import applications submitted by Fiji.

Consequently, there is a reported shortage of ammunition available for recreational use and farmland protection, which some fear could encourage the
illicit market. (8)
