Current procurement of military-calibre small arms ammunition for the US armed forces averages approximately one billion units per annum, which represents about 66 per cent of existing production capacity (Forecast International, 2002).

The global production of military-calibre ammunition is dominated by producers in the United States and a handful of European countries such as Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, and Norway. There is no information on the volume of production of ammunition for commercial firearms.
