The Albanian authorities were unable to provide an official estimate for the number of illicit firearms held by civilians during 2012 to 2016. While estimates exist, most were made over ten years ago and given the fluidity of arms movements and the porosity of borders within the region, as well as efforts undertaken by the Albanian Government to collect and destroy surplus SALW and ammunition since the looting of military storage depots in 1997, it is difficult to determine the accuracy of these estimates.

Between 2012 and 2016, there were 2,993 cases of illegal possession of firearms, with 452 cases recorded in 2016. The number of confiscated and temporarily confiscated firearms in 2016 was 590 and 240 respectively. In 2014, there was an initial spike in the number of cases of illegal possession of firearms, confiscated firearms and temporarily confiscated firearms.
