As Table 1 illustrates, the number of firearms held by civilians and private entities increased from 164,665 in 2012 to 186,091 in 2016, with the vast majority of firearms held by civilians (95.2% on average across all five years). Legal civilian firearm holdings increased steadily from 160,516 in 2012 to 173,704 in 2016, an increase of 8.2%, while the firearms held by private entities increased by 198.6%, from 4,149 in 2012 to 12,387 by 2016.
