The research team estimate that there are somewhere between 93,206 and 259,026 illegal SALW in Bulgaria today, the mean estimate being 160,707 units. It should be emphasized, however, that this is a tentative estimate, based on a method that has several important limitations.

Firstly, the proportion of suicides in which illegal weapons are used will vary from year to year, so the 2003 figures may not be typical. Secondly, it may be unwise to make generalizations from the police seizure statistics above about the distribution of unregistered weapons in the population as a whole, since many Bulgarians with illegal weapons will be otherwise law-abiding citizens who are unlikely to feature in police statistics.

[SALW = small arms and light weapons]
