The circulation of lost, stolen, and found firearms plays an essential role in the investigation of firearm-related crime, in the efficient control of firearms and ultimately, in the reduction of the proliferation of firearms.

During 2016/2017, the details of 17,260 firearms owned by individuals, dealers and institutions, were circulated as recovered, compared to 8,465, in 2015/2016. As a result of the removal of serial numbers, a total of 8,865 firearms could not be linked to their lawful owners. Furthermore, the details of 9,853 firearms, were circulated as stolen or lost[…]

A total number of 15,148 firearms and 98,814 rounds of ammunition were voluntarily surrendered to the SAPS [South African Police Service], during 2016/2017, compared to 3,857 firearms and 60,102 rounds of ammunition that were handed in, during 2015/2016. These firearms and firearms which were confiscated, that could not be linked to owners and for which new Weapon Register numbers were issued, were destroyed by the SAPS.

From 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017, a total of 12,418 firearms were destroyed, compared to 14,382, in 2015/2016[…]
