The purpose of this data release is to inform discussion and assist policy development.

These tables contain information on the underlying causes of all deaths registered in New Zealand in 2015. Most information is broken down by age, sex, prioritised ethnicity, district health board (DHB) region and ICD-10-AM chapters, subgroups and three character classifications.

Underlying cause of death, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is '(a) the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or (b) the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury' (WHO 1979).

ICD-10-AM: causes of death were coded to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification, Eighth Edition.
