The WHO Mortality Data Base contains mortality data by country, year, cause of death, age and sex, submitted to the WHO by its Member States on an annual basis from 1950 to date. Because of the amount of information it contains, extracting some data is not a simple task for users without adequate data base management skills. For that reason, CoDQL [Cause of Death Query Online] has been put on-line to allow users to extract the data needed for their purposes in an easy and fast manner.

CoDQL allows flexible and user-friendly access to the mortality data at the detailed character ICD code level when available. It supplements the WHO Mortality Database on-line version http://apps.who.int/healthinfo/statistics/mortality/whodpms/ which provides mortality data only for predefined, aggregated causes of death.

The cause of death may be selected using one of the following coding systems:
- ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision)
- ICD-9 (International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision)
- ICD-8 (International Classification of Diseases, 8th revision)
- ICD-7 (International Classification of Diseases, 7th revision)

[Editor's Note: The WHO Mortality Data Base provides annual statistics on cause of death for 117 reporting countries. Data can be disaggregated by sex, age, and cause of death. Users should note that this data is derived from the mortality reports generated within the national health sector. This often differs with analogous data reported by national police and justice authorities due to different definitions and reporting methods. Depending on the country, one data source may be more accurate than another. As such, GunPolicy.org does its best to factor in these differences, though users should still be vigilant to these discrepancies.

GunPolicy.org collects data for the following categories using the corresponding ICD-10 codes:
- Homicides (any method): X85-Y09
- Gun Homicides: X93-95
- Suicides (any method): X70-84
- Gun Suicides: X72-74
- Unintentional Gun Deaths: W32-34
- Gun Deaths from Undetermined Causes: Y22-24]
