5. Marking of small arms and light weapons

With a view to keeping data on weapons up to date and reliably supporting the central registry and data bases for purposes of tracking the movement of weapons, and in implementation of the international instrument on the identification and tracing of weapons, and also the implementation of the New York Protocol on the issue, we have obtained two weapons marking machines with financial and technical support from the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA). Upon taking delivery of these machines, we embarked on the process of marking weapons owned by civilians, and to date over 25,000 such weapons have been marked.

We have also begun to mark weapons held by police forces, and to date over 26,000 such weapons have been marked. The process will continue until all weapons in the Sudan have been marked…
