Nine years ago the then NSW Premier, Mr Barrie Unsworth, stormed out of a special "gun summit" of State ministers chaired by the then Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, angrily declaring:

"It will take a massacre in Tasmania before we get gun law reform in Australia."

He was shaken when reminded of this by a reporter after the Port Arthur massacre.
