Today there are two million legally owned guns in Sweden, shared by some 600,000 owners (source: Dagens Nyheter).

In order to obtain a gun license you must be at least 18 years of age. Applications must be approved by the police who check applicants against the criminal records and driving licence registries. For a hunting license you must also have passed a hunting exam. For firearms with targeted shooting capability you must have been a member of an approved shooting club for at least six months.

Since 2000, licences for handguns and fully-automatic weapons have been issued for a maximum of five years at a time.
