The exact number is difficult to pin down, but we do know that about 55,000 guns have been legally imported into New Zealand every year since 2005, according to figures released by Customs in 2015.

Back then, the total number of guns was estimated at 1.1 million, add the half a million legally imported guns since then and you might conclude that 1.5 million is a conservative estimate.

However, in lieu of better estimates let's assume 1.5 million is the number. This equates to about 30 guns for every 100 New Zealanders. In 2006, the estimated 1.1 million guns equated to about 26 guns per 100 people so the total number relative to the population has been increasing.
