Police stations and gun shops around Rockhampton have received more than 500 unregistered guns as the Queensland firearm amnesty enters its final month.

Campco Rockhampton firearm specialist Peter Watts said… "The main firearms we have seen are usually heirlooms that have never been registered before…" "The government has made it a fairly simple process for these people to register them and do the right thing, which is a good thing."

More than 4000 weapons around Queensland have been handed in for registration or destruction, with a small portion changing hands for safe keeping.

Of the 4074 changing hands since the amnesty began, 3237 were for registration and 51 were for storage…

The amnesty allows those with illegal guns in the house to have them formally registered or delivered for destruction without fear of penalty.

For those not so keen to walk into a police station with an unregistered weapon, they may also be legalised through gun shops and shooting clubs.
