On Monday, 12 Solomons police officers left for Taiwan to attend a close personal protection training course which Solomons officials initially thought included firearms training.

But a statement from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canberra on Thursday said "firearms shooting training has been removed from the training program".

The statement also said Taiwan would not provide firearms to rearm the Solomons police force.

A weapons-free Solomons has been a key element in RAMSI's assignment to restore law and order and good governance following years of ethnic tension.
