Fiji: Ambassador Warns of Dangerous Arms Trade

[Fiji's ambassador to the United Nations Isikia] Savua, who was Police Commissioner when George Speight seized the government on May 19, 2000, told the conference the region had become a "depository" of weapons from various countries left behind after the World Wars.

He said efforts by regional governments individually and as part of a regional process had exerted "a modicum of control" on the movement and use of illegal weapons and slowing down its proliferation, the Fiji government information service reported.
