"Get the Guns;" that is the message from Commissioner of Police Dr. Carl Williams as the 'Get the Guns Campaign' was officially launched at the Office of the Commissioner of Police on Thursday, September 17.
The campaign, which was first announced in July of this year, is geared towards significantly reducing the number of illegal guns and ammunition in the hands of criminals in Jamaica.
"Our intention is to seize illegal guns well above our current average of 600 guns per year," said Dr. Williams. "This initiative is needed to help reduce gun violence in Jamaica."
Consequently, monetary incentives (rewards) will be offered to people who provide information that leads to seizure of illegal guns and ammunition. Additionally, Police officers in divisions that seize the most guns will also receive a cash incentive.
Within the last 10 years, guns were featured in over 10,000 murders or 75 percent of the over 13000 murders recorded during that period. Additionally, about 9000 Jamaicans have been shot injured within that period.
"We need this initiative and we are determined to make it succeed by partnering with a wider group of the Jamaican public, including the private sector and the church to reduce the country's murder rate," said Dr. Williams.
Members of the public are being urged to assist the Police by telling them what they know, call Crime Stop at 311 or 811 to report illegal weapons, wanted persons or suspicious individuals in their communities and also by using the Stay Alert App in the Google play store.
