Dominican Republic to Launch Disarmament Campaign
Initiative comes after local church leaders helped authorities collect 2,000 firearms last year.

Brazil removed 1.1 million weapons from its streets between 2003 and 2009 by encouraging residents to turn in their guns voluntarily in exchange for compensation and immunity from being charged with possessing unlicensed firearms.
The Brazilian government began a new campaign in 2011, aimed at removing an additional one million guns. Under the plan, owners are paid as much as US$190 in exchange for their weapons, which are immediately destroyed and eventually melted down…
