Poachers in the north have surrendered over 40 home made guns to authorities in a programme that signals a ceasefire in the battle against poaching in protected areas in the region.
Division manager for Wildlife Department George Qumayo said since January, poachers have voluntarily handed over 44 home made guns used in the poaching of animals in Vwaza Game Reserve and Nyika National Park.

Malawi Police has destroyed over 3,000 illegal firearms confiscated from people across the country.Inspector General Lot Dzonzi said in Lilongwe during the destruction exercise that Malawi is vulnerable to firearms smuggling because of a number of reasons including its geographical position, lack of scanning machines at its border posts and use of unchartered routes by foreigners.

Deputy speaker of Parliament James Chingola was Wednesday morning interrogated by the Malawi Police over the illegal possession of firearms which were found at one of his offices.
