Drug Gang Found Smuggling Guns from Bulgaria to Spain, 23 Arrested

A National Police operation has broken up a drugs and weapons trafficking organisation which smuggled arms into Spain from Bulgaria and sold them onto other criminal gangs. The Interior Ministry said in a press release that 23 people are in custody and 19 weapons have been seized after eight property searches.

Civil Guard associations in Alicante are concerned at the worrying increase in the number of new gun licences issued in the province, an increase last year of 40% on 2004.
They say that, while many of the new licences were for hunting guns, they were not accompanied by a similar rise in licences to hunt.
Self-defence is the only explanation, they say.

Retired Guardia Civil Uses Service Pistol to Shoot Daughter, Wife, Himself

A 71 year old retired Guardia Civil shot his 68 year old wife, his 35 year old daughter, then turned the gun on himself. The incident occurred shortly before 5pm at the couple's home on Antilla beach in Lepe (Huelva). Although neither of the women died in the attack, both were seriously injured.

MADRID — Police arrested a Russian woman on arms trafficking charges after she was found in possession of 38 pen guns, officials said Thursday.
The tiny weapons, which look like fountain pens, are used by crime gangs as a weapon of self-defense when they attend meetings with other groups, said Ester Aren, a police spokeswoman.
