New restrictive laws around arms control in New Caledonia are due to be in place at the beginning of March. The new date has been given by the French interior minister attending the National Assembly. Last month, the French high commissioner in New Caledonia expressed concern at the spike in firearms sales after Paris said it would tighten gun laws before the end of the year. SACRAMENTO — Gun maker Smith & Wesson announced Thursday that it would stop selling newly designed semiautomatic pistols in California because of a state law requiring those firearms to imprint a unique, identifying "microstamp" on bullet casings. The law, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007 but not implemented until May 2013, is intended to help police investigators link shell casings found at crime scenes to a specific gun. LOS ANGELES — Smith & Wesson, the firearms manufacturer, announced Thursday that it would not sell new semiautomatic pistols in California because of its objections to a gun safety law that took effect in the state last May. The Unsafe Handgun Act, which was signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007, requires gun makers to use a technology called microstamping in new or upgraded gun models.
