A man in a car stopped by police on Thursday in Malvern, Durban, was allegedly carrying a loaded gun hidden in a loaf of bread. Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said the man was arrested and a case of possessing an unlicensed firearm was opened at the Malvern police station. Another man in the car was also arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. Police allegedly found a knife concealed in his belt. The men were expected to appear on Friday in the Pinetown... An "alarming" cache of high-powered firearms and ammunition have been seized from an Auckland lock-up. Shotguns, military-style assault rifles, a silenced rifle, a handgun and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found by detectives at a storage compound in Onehunga yesterday as part of an on-going investigation into an associate of the Hells Angels. Some 20,000 Maltese were estimated to own firearms according to a study carried out by Eurostat. However, only two per cent said they owned the gun for personal protection, much less than the EU average of 14 per cent. A total 21 per cent said they were collectors. The study, conducted in collaboration with Misco last month, found that only seven per cent of those surveyed had owned a firearm. According to sources, the cargo ship "nourm" flagged with Sierra Leone, transferred a large amount of weapons.
