MEXICO CITY — Police in Latin America will soon have access to a Spanish version of a U.S. gun-tracking system that could widen efforts to hunt down crime suspects and weapons traffickers. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said Wednesday that it is about to begin testing a Spanish-language version of eTrace, the computer system that helps police trace who buys U.S. firearms. "This is to allow the infrastructure to make it easier for law... (GunPolicy.org)

New York - Gilbert Arenas tried joking about his gun trouble. David Stern found none of it funny. Arenas was suspended indefinitely without pay Wednesday by the NBA commissioner, who determined the player's behavior made him "not currently fit to take the court." A day after the Washington Wizards guard was photographed before a game in Philadelphia pointing his index fingers, as if they were guns, at his teammates, Stern warned the former All-Star that his conduct... CAIRO, Egypt - Three men in a car sprayed automatic gunfire into a crowd of churchgoers in southern Egypt as they left a midnight Mass for Coptic Christmas, killing at least seven people in a drive-by shooting, the church bishop and security officials said. Egypt's Interior Ministry said the attack Wednesday just before midnight was suspected as retaliation for the November rape of a Muslim girl by a Christian man in the same town. The statement said witnesses have... (GunPolicy.org)

U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Chicago, had 54 members of congress join his friend-of-the-court brief Wednesday that urged the court to leave Chicago's handgun ban in place. Chicago residents represented who challenged the city's gun ban in court say they would like to have handguns to defend themselves in their homes. Gun-rights activists back them up. The U.S. Supreme Court's majority threw out Washington D.C.'s handgun ban but left open the issue of whether their... (GunPolicy.org)

Carrying guns in public might only be outlawed at the courthouse and the jailhouse under one of at least two major firearms bills expected to be before state lawmakers this year. Lawmakers don't officially converge on the state Capitol until next week for a session expected to focus mainly on bleak revenues and budget cuts. But already the firearms bill that might bring about the most sweeping changes is set Thursday to go before a House committee for a first... (GunPolicy.org)

The National Rifle Association asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to allow its lawyer to take part in the oral argument March 2 in the case testing whether the Second Amendment restricts the power of state and local governments to pass gun control laws. It sought 10 minutes of time allotted to the individuals and groups that are pursuing the Amendment's extension, to put more stress on an alternative constitutional argument. The request, the NRA noted in its motion, is... (GunPolicy.org)

South Australia Police have collected about 700 replica firearms during a three month amnesty with more than 100 confiscated. It was the first time replica firearms were included in an amnesty after laws were introduced in October making their registration compulsory. People now found with unregistered replica guns could face up to 15 years in jail. Chief Inspector Jim Langmead says the result is significant because many are being converted into weapons and used in... (GunPolicy.org)
