A man has killed at least three people at a gymnasium in the US state of Pennsylvania, before shooting himself. Another 10 people were injured by gunfire in the town of Bridgeville near Pittsburgh, after the incident at the LA Fitness Center. An eyewitness told a local TV station that a man entered an all-female dance class, turned off the lights, took two guns out of a bag and began firing. "People everywhere were screaming. It was horrible," said the witness.... (GunPolicy.org)

The man who shot up a Pittsburgh-area gym, killing three and injuring as many as 15 others before apparently turning a gun on himself kept an online diary detailing his hatred for his domineering mother and brother and his lust for other women. ABC's "Good Morning America" has confirmed that George Sodini, 48, of Scott Township, Pa., was the man who police say walked quietly Wednesday into an aerobics class at the L.A. Fitness center in Bridgeville, Pa., where he was... (GunPolicy.org)

SANAA — The Yemeni government is struggling to control the spread of small arms in major cities, despite the two-year-old ban on firearms. The Interior Ministry's July 2007 ban "somewhat resulted in the disappearance of guns in the capital [Sanaa] and other main cities like Taiz, Ibb and Dhamar only", Khalid al-Ansi, a lawyer at the National Organization for Defending Rights and Freedoms, told IRIN in Sanaa. The move, however, does not help in disarming people as... (GunPolicy.org)

They've got 4 million followers. He's got 16 billion simoleons. This could get verrrrry interesting. This being the stare-down between the National Rifle Association and Michael Bloomberg. Behemoth vs. behemoth. Since the Reagan revolution, few lobbies have been mightier than the NRA. The Second Amendment defenders rarely lose on Capitol Hill, but lose they did just a few days ago, falling short in a sit-up-and-take-notice squeaker of a Senate vote on an... (GunPolicy.org)

Four years ago, Arne Duncan says, he became "obsessed with numbers" he couldn't get. He was the CEO of Chicago Public Schools then, not the Secretary of Education he is today. How many of his students were getting shot, he wanted to know? "I could tell you exactly how many schools we closed, how many children had the H1N1 virus," he said Tuesday from his office in Washington. But not how many Chicago kids were hit. Or data to compare Chicago with other cities. "No... (GunPolicy.org)

SANAA, Yemen — A two-year government ban on firearms in Yemen claimed only modest success as locals prefer customs over formal judicial measures, the U.N. reports. The Interior Ministry in 2007 imposed a ban on firearms to control the spread of weapons in major cities. The government says nearly 293,000 unregistered weapons have been seized since the ban was instituted. The measure comes as Yemen attempts to control al-Qaida affiliates attempting to establish... BRIDGEVILLE, Pennsylvania — Police in Pennsylvania say a gunman who sprayed bullets at women exercising at his suburban Pittsburgh health club, killing three of them, did not have a relationship with any of the victims. Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt also says that the 48-year-old gunman, George Sodini, had four guns on him and used three of them in the attack. Sodini was a member of the L.A. Fitness club and had been there two times Tuesday... (GunPolicy.org)

They are the musings of a monster. The frustrated loner who murdered three women at a suburban Pittsburgh gym before killing himself wrote a vile journal that revealed he planned the massacre for months — and "chickened out" on his first try. Suicidal suspect George Sodini complained he'd had "no sex since July 1990" and blamed his parents, his siblings — even his preacher — for the fact that "girls and women don't even give me a second look ANYWHERE." He... (GunPolicy.org)

One year ago, David Thweatt made a decision so controversial and groundbreaking the story about it sped around the world. The Harrold Independent School District superintendent made history last August when he and his school board decided to allow select teachers and staff members at the 110-student school to carry guns on campus — a first for Texas and the nation. For Thweatt and his board, the decision was pure mathematics. The school, which sits in the middle... (GunPolicy.org)

Eleven years after the Senate last confirmed Sonia Sotomayor for a federal judgeship, the chamber is poised on Thursday to put her on the Supreme Court by a nearly identical margin. President Barack Obama's nominee — the court's first Hispanic — is a shoo-in for confirmation, leaving the margin of approval and the amount of GOP support as the only real questions. Even Sotomayor's stiffest critics have conceded she has enough votes. "I don't think there's any doubt... (GunPolicy.org)

BRIDGEVILLE, Pennsylvania — George Sodini seethed with anger and frustration toward women. He couldn't understand why they ignored him, despite his best efforts to look nice. He hadn't had a girlfriend since 1984, hadn't slept with a woman in 19 years. "Women just don't like me. There are 30 million desirable women in the US (my estimate) and I cannot find one. Not one of them finds me attractive," the 48-year-old computer programmer lamented in a chilling diary he... (GunPolicy.org)
