Three security guards were disarmed and robbed during a cash delivery at a Commonwealth Bank today — the fourth armoured van hold-up in three weeks. As The Daily Telegraph reported this morning on urgent new moves to stop thieves targetting armed guards for their weapons, the guards were ambushed by four masked gunmen as they tried to enter the bank at West Ryde carrying bags of cash about 7.45am. Witnesses said the guards were ordered to lie on the footpath before... (GunPolicy.org)

The bulk of a package of gun control legislation intended to help stem the gun violence plaguing San Francisco advanced Monday — though even the legislation's co-sponsors aren't sure how much good it will do. The Public Safety Committee of the Board of Supervisors sent three of the four pieces of legislation — introduced by Mayor Gavin Newsom in May — to the full board. Under those three measures, residents would have to keep handguns in locked containers or... (GunPolicy.org)

It looks like a ransom note, but it is not being sent by kidnappers. It is being promoted by the Patrick administration, the Boston Police Department, and the State Police, and delivered to drivers on the Massachusetts Turnpike courtesy of John Rosenthal, a provocative gun control activist from Newton. "We have your President and Congress," declares the message in letters that look as if they had been snipped from a newspaper. It is signed simply, NRA, referring to the... (GunPolicy.org)

SPRINGFIELD — Facing a budget crisis that is six weeks old, Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Monday stunned and angered lawmakers who accused him of using a highly emotional gun-control issue to divert attention from the fiscal breakdown and divide an Illinois House solidly against his spending plans. Even the Chicago Democrat who is a sponsor of the anti-gun legislation took to the House floor to tell colleagues the primary focus now should be on reaching an accord on the... (GunPolicy.org)

WASHINGTON — More than 200 U.S. mayors urged Congress on Tuesday to stop "pandering" to the gun lobby and repeal an amendment that they say makes it harder for police to trace illegal firearms carried between states. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent mentioned as a possible presidential contender, helped lead the uphill bid to eliminate the amendment ahead of a vote on it this week by the House Appropriations Committee. The Mayors Against Illegal Guns... (GunPolicy.org)

When police raided the luxury property of a north Queensland doctor they found a huge cache of banned military-style weapons and ammunition hidden in a purpose-built underground bunker. Some initially feared it was the "sinister" stockpile of some militia group or blackmarket international arms dealer. But it simply proved to be the private stash of highly respected Innisfail GP and avid gun collector John Di Palma. Yesterday, Di Palma, 54, walked free from court... (GunPolicy.org)

WASHINGTON — New Jersey lawmakers urged Congress today to allow the federal government to share gun information with local and state law enforcement officials. At issue is the so-called Tiahrt Amendment, which the lawmakers say prevents the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from sharing data on guns used in crimes with state and local authorities. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer, Morristown... (GunPolicy.org)
