Gunrunners, by Sean Boyne. O'Brien, 19.95 'GOD made the Catholics, but the Armalite made them equal' was the writing once scrawled on a wall in Derry's Bogside. But where did the Armalite come from? In the early years of the Northern Ireland conflict, the IRA guns mainly came from the USA, through smuggling operations organised by Irish-American republican sympathisers. The Armalites, we are assured by General John de Chastelain, have all been destroyed. The IRA is... (GunPolicy.org)

To the Editor: Re "A Rifle in Every Pot" (Op-Ed, Jan. 16): Glenn Reynolds may be right in his contention that mandatory firearm ownership helps maintain lower crime rates in some communities, yet the resolution of the question of gun control is not furthered by simply tallying the benefits that accrue to specific groups as a result of ready access to these weapons. Inside a four-bedroom home nestled within an Oak Brook woods forest preserve, a gun-rights advocate is packing his bags, including his notorious fanny pack. Guns, ranging from pistols to large... (GunPolicy.org)

Two years ago, when a 14-year-old boy accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother, we called for the strict enforcement of gun laws even in family tragedies. We argued that not doing so sends the wrong message, and that before enacting new gun laws, we need to aggressively enforce the laws we already have — even if at times it seems "hardhearted." Such an example is the case of Andrea Parker, a Cook County correctional officer who was charged Wednesday with reckless... (GunPolicy.org)

We'd been shooting for a while by the time the amiable chatting started up. This was Friday morning at the pistol range, where it was Sean Spradlin, me, and some other guy firing in another lane. Sean and the other guy began the obligatory small talk that often crops up when strangers share a small space. Turned out both men are truck drivers, although Mr. Spradlin currently works as a security guard. And, of course, both men obviously enjoy shooting guns. "I just... (GunPolicy.org)
