Police arrested and charged an Australian man and a top government officer in Daru for allegedly dealing in illicit drugs and being in possession of firearms.
The national drug squad and southern command task force rounded up the two on Sunday during one its regular joint drug operations in the province.
Police said they were tipped off by some informants about the deal that was about to take place.

Sako Rifle Causes More Injuries Than Maker Reported

Defective hunting rifles manufactured by the Finnish company Sako have injured a total of three people. In each case, the gun exploded as the user was firing the weapon.
On Friday, Sako CEO Henry Paasikivi insisted that only one person, a Swede, had been injured.
Paasikivi failed to mention the case of Nicklas Törnkvist, a 31-year-old hunter from Helsinki, whom he had personally met at least twice.

New York Mayor Signs New Gun Maker, Dealer Liability Law

For the first time in the nation, gun makers and dealers are now liable for injuries or deaths caused by the criminal use of their weapons, under a landmark law signed yesterday by Mayor Bloomberg.
The law — one of four bills signed regulating gun sales and possession — goes further than any other city's effort to hold the gun industry financially responsible for crimes involving their weapons.

Ex-Cop Sentenced for Stealing Weapons, Ammo

A man who stole guns, ammunition and explosives when he was a member of the Allegheny County Police SWAT and bomb squads was sentenced today to two years of house arrest and a year of probation.
Judge Jeffrey Manning sentenced Mark Short, 43, who had pleaded no contest in November to charges of theft and prohibited offensive weapons.
Short was found in possession of 54 firearms, 10,000 rounds of ammunition, high explosives and grenades at his home in Moon.

Frustrated by a 28 percent increase in homicides during the past year, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has proposed a sweeping measure banning handguns, injecting the city into the national debate over gun control.
