The Police Directorate has asked for permission to equip a certain number of police cars with machine guns and rifles.
In a letter to the Justice Department, Director of Police Ingelin Killengreen writes that the development of crime shows that there may be a need for heavier arms.
She therefore requests permission to to use heavier weapons in patrol cars than the revolvers used today.

Gun Charge in Murder of Australian Police Officer

A DNA match has led to the charging of a man with the theft of the security company gun used to murder police officer Glenn McEnallay.
The weapon, a .38 calibre Smith & Wesson Special, was among six pistols taken during the armed hold-up of Sydney security firm CARS in March 2002.
Constable McEnallay was shot dead two weeks later while chasing a stolen vehicle at Hillsdale, in the city's east.
