WASHINGTON — In a policy reversal, the Bush administration is ready to allow some U.S. airline pilots to carry guns in the cockpit on a trial basis, a senior government source said on Wednesday. While details of the plan are still being worked out by the Transportation Security Administration and other officials, the basic framework for a limited test program has been essentially drawn up. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Opponents of a bill allowing qualified Ohioans to carry hidden handguns said yesterday they fear lawmakers will rush the controversial measure through soon after the last polling place closes in November. "In the big spirit of it all, I understand why they want to do it. But it... (GunPolicy.org)

Wisconsin athletic director Pat Richter asked chancellor John Wiley on Wednesday to make an exception to the policy. Wiley agreed. "Obviously there was a segment of... (GunPolicy.org)

PHILADELPHIA — An incident aboard Delta Flight 442 over the weekend has prompted critics of the federal air marshal program to argue that post-Sept. 11 changes in the way officers handle danger aboard jets could prove to actually decrease safety. While federal authorities say a marshal was justified in drawing his handgun on Saturday's flight from Atlanta to Philadelphia, consumer advocates and safety experts questioned whether the action was taken too quickly. The... (GunPolicy.org)

SUFFOLK — Residents soon could be required to get fingerprinted every time they apply for a permit to carry a concealed handgun. The City Council is expected to vote today on the measure that a gun-shop owner triggered when he recently applied for a new five-year permit. Richard Harris, who's been carrying a concealed weapon since 1974, reapplied in August for his new permit. When asked for his police-issued fingerprint card, the 57-year-old former councilman...
