APPOMATTOX — A 12-year-old boy died Monday evening after a pistol he was playing with discharged and shot him in the head. Appomattox County Sheriff O. Wilson Staples said the boy was dead when the Appomattox Volunteer Rescue Squad arrived at the boy's home off Virginia 645 in the Promise Land community about 7 p.m. Staples said the victim and several other youngsters had been playing with the gun for a couple of days. WINSTON-SALEM — The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office improperly renewed more than 100 concealed-handgun permits to residents in the past year, but apparently not to ineligible gun owners. The problem was discovered about a month ago and resulted in a State Bureau of Investigation warning to law enforcement agencies statewide to check their procedures, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Sunday.
