Two years after her son was murdered with a gun stolen from a shop in Elgin, former resident Terry Kimble sued the store and its owner Tuesday, claiming the owner neglected to secure the store's stock against burglars. Kimble filed the wrongful-death suit in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging that the B&L Rod and Gun Shop and its owner, William Whistle, failed to take proper security measures, even after the store had been robbed. Elgin police said burglars broke... (GunPolicy.org)

WASHINGTON — Move over Scarface, and make way for The Duke. While critics condemn gratuitous violence in Hollywood films, gun rights advocates want to remind Americans that weapons have played an important role in the history of movies. The National Rifle Association, in an effort to draw more attention to its museum in Fairfax, Va., is displaying a vast array of guns, knives — and even Obi Wan Kenobi's light saber — from Hollywood films as wide-ranging as Star... The public would have a tougher time seeing records kept by sheriffs and chiefs of police on people holding concealed weapons permits under a bill given final House approval Wednesday. House Bill 1147 by Rep. Mark Cloer, R-Colorado Springs, was sent to the Senate on a 38-24 vote after the House decided to reverse a decision it made Tuesday. That was when the full House got its first look at the measure, which contained a provision giving sheriffs and chiefs of police... (GunPolicy.org)

The gun lobby long has promoted the idea that if more people owned guns, there would be less crime. Whether or not that is true, the price paid by children has been steep, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. Their study covered the decade between 1988 and 1997, when 6,817 children ages 5 to 14 died from gunshot wounds. The study compared deaths among youths in the five states with the highest level of gun ownership (Louisiana, Alabama,... (GunPolicy.org)

The 4-year-old who died after police said he shot himself in the stomach in the middle of the night was found with two guns one tucked in the boy's training pants. We're holding up, by the grace of God and prayers, we're holding up, Sabrius grandmother said Tuesday. Marlene Williams said that prayer is getting her through since the death of Sabrius Dwight Mortin, her grandson. That's how I like to remember him, as a little boy that played. That everybody loved him,... (GunPolicy.org)

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa is so steeped in violence, it has become a way of life, a culture that holds a dangerous allure for today's youth. I was born in a cruel world, I m living in a cruel world, and I'll die in a cruel world. I haven't got money so what must I do? I must steal that car to get money to support my wife and children and my brothers. They are all looking up to me. So speaks Killer, a gangster working for a car hijacking syndicate in... Law-abiding Hamilton County residents can carry concealed weapons, the 1st Ohio District Court of Appeals decided Wednesday in a lawsuit challenging Ohio's ban on carrying hidden weapons. A three-judge panel unanimously called the Ohio statute vague and subjective in their opinion that the law is unconstitutional. The problem with (the law) is that it does not simply regulate but effectively prohibits law-abiding citizens from bearing weapons, said Judge Mark Painter.... (GunPolicy.org)

CONCORD — Gun owners urged the Senate yesterday to reject a bill that tightens the law on gun possession in safe school zones. House Bill 1187 is intended to give police the power to make arrests when students bring guns to school. Sponsors said federal laws are the only law enforcement tool available, but it can take days for federal marshals to respond to a report. The issue came to light after an incident in Gilford when a student had a gun at school and police... (GunPolicy.org)

Convicted felon Wade L. Willis is waging a legal battle for gun rights that makes even the most strident Second Amendment activist flinch. In a case pending before the Utah Court of Appeals, Willis says the law prohibiting felons from possessing guns violates the Utah Constitution's sweeping guarantee of self-defense rights. Much broader than the U.S. Constitution, the state version specifically recognizes an individual right to keep and bear arms. While the Utah... (GunPolicy.org)

A state appeals court on Wednesday declared Ohio's decades-old ban on carrying concealed weapons unconstitutional because it violates the right to self defense. The framers of the Ohio constitution put the citizens rights up front, said Mark Painter, presiding judge of the 1st Ohio District Court of Appeals. We believe they meant what they said. An appeal is likely. Lawyers for Cincinnati, Hamilton County and the state had argued that government has the right to... (GunPolicy.org)

Apparently, a great scandal is likely to overshadow all the attempts by Albanian politics to create the image of Albania as a country where trafficking and its serious implications which the international community has been criticizing so strongly have finally been brought to an end. If the international factors are not going to forgive Albania for this scandal this time, its punishment, in terms of the diplomatic and political approach to it, is going to be firmer than... Defence Secretary Frederick Punangi strongly feels that Defence reforms are the way out for the defence force. "And retrenchment is the initial step towards the reform process that should take place and must take place," Mr Punangi said yesterday after signing his contract of employment with Head of State, Governor-General Sir Silas Atopare at Government House.
