A member of the cleanup crew preparing a Scarborough house for sale where a murder-suicide took place pulled at a loose piece of panelling and was suddenly staring at a weapons cache — rifles, handguns, ammunition and at least one hand grenade. Enough to start a war, Karl Popow, an associate broker at Remax 2000, who is selling 4177 Lawrence Ave. E., said in an interview yesterday. There was at least one hand grenade … We didn't spend too much time looking to see... (GunPolicy.org)

With little discussion, the Metropolitan King County Council yesterday OK'd a plan to make guns safer by selling guns. The motion passed by the council allows the county Sheriff's Office to sell confiscated guns, raising money to buy lockboxes for deputies to keep their weapons safe at home. The lockboxes cost $70 to $110 each, and the county has 672 commissioned officers, so $47,000 to $74,000 is involved. The lockboxes provide a safe way to store weapons, keeping... (GunPolicy.org)

Washington Bulls forward Charles Oakley patted his suit coat after a recent practice at the Berto Center and referred to the 9mm pistol he was carrying. Oakley never brandished the weapon, and he might have been just joking, but the relationship between athletes and firearms turned deadly serious on Feb. 14 when limousine driver Costas Christofi was shot to death in the home of former New Jersey Nets star Jayson Williams, a close friend of Oakley s. Williams has been... (GunPolicy.org)

Victor Bout, a Russian air cargo magnate who has been accused of running guns to al-Qaida and the Taliban, said in an interview published Tuesday that the allegations were nonsense. U.N. officials and others have also said Bout used a fleet of planes and contacts from his days in the Soviet Air Force and possibly the KGB to buy weapons in formerly communist Eastern Europe and deliver them to rebel groups in Africa. Peter Hain, Britain's minister for European affairs... (GunPolicy.org)

While the war on terrorism continues, gun control advocates say there is another ongoing war that is killing far too many young people each year. The war is being waged with handguns that fall in to the wrong hands, be it young people or criminals. And advocates of tighter gun controls say part of the solution may soon be at hand with personalized or "smart guns" that could only be fired by the owner. But those on the other side of the explosive issue, say that... (GunPolicy.org)

Seven Nassau gun owners have filed suit against the county, charging that Nassau legislators imposed an illegal tax when they voted two years ago to increase pistol permit fees to $200 from $25. The lawsuit, funded by the National Rifle Association on behalf of about 39,000 Nassau pistol permit holders, was filed in State Supreme Court in Mineola two weeks ago and asks that the 700 percent fee increase approved by the legislature in June 2000 be thrown out, plaintiff... The Brocock ME 38 air pistol looks and feels like a real gun and has become the bugbear of every big city police force. MPs and chief constables have been calling for controls because an increasing number of air cartridge pistols are being converted to fire bullets. The guns can be bought over the counter by anyone over the age of 17. Made in Germany and imported by a Birmingham company, they have been on sale in Britain for a decade and are intended for target... (GunPolicy.org)

Aboriginal police liaison officers will be left vulnerable to attacks by criminals and unable to patrol remote communities as a result of an order to disarm them, country police say. Perth-based liaison officers were yesterday told they would not be allowed to carry guns despite sometimes coming across armed criminals and violent situations. An e-mail sent to officers in charge of metropolitan stations yesterday said a ban on APLOs carrying police-issue firearms would... (GunPolicy.org)

An elderly woman who fatally shot an alleged intruder over the weekend said Monday she will not hesitate to pull the trigger again to protect herself. Sena Miller (pictured, left), 83, said a teenage boy tried to break into her East Side home early Sunday when she told him to leave. Miller said when the boy refused to go, she grabbed her gun and opened fire through her locked front door. I didn't aim, I just shoot, Miller said. He hollered, I've been hit. The alleged...
