A month after a massacre at a Wakefield office, two gun-control advocates in the Legislature said they see growing momentum to pass several bills that would make the state's toughest-in-the-nation gun laws even stricter. The rampage that took the lives of seven Edgewater Technology Inc. workers Dec. 26 has brought new urgency to the effort to win passage of gun-control bills, said Senator Cheryl A. Jacques, a Needham Democrat who has pushed for more stringent gun... (GunPolicy.org)

The Canadian Firearms Centre says there are far fewer gun owners in Canada than opponents of Bill C-68 claim. Extrapolating from telephone interviews with 6,145 households, it says there are only 2.46 million gun owners in the country. Is the centre firing on all chambers? First, if you had an unregistered gun, would you tell a phone survey? Second, in 1991 the government used a study of 10,000 respondents to proclaim 3.3 million gun owners. If it was that wrong the... LLOYD ROBERTSON: Ottawa is acknowledging widespread resistance to new gun controls. Gun owners were required to have a license to buy ammunition by January first. Yet, a new federal survey shows hundreds of thousands of gun owners have failed to apply for a license. The survey shows more than two million Canadians own guns. In the cities, one in ten households has a gun. In rural Canada, the rate is one in three. Nationwide, Ottawa estimates nearly half a million gun... (GunPolicy.org)

EDMONTON — Maryantonett Flumian, the head of the federal organization tasked to implement Canada's new firearms legislation, said yesterday the bill was poorly implemented and requires further changes. In an interview with the National Post yesterday, Ms. Flumian, the chief executive officer of the Canadian Firearms Centre, defended Bill C-68 and said the law was a showcase piece of public safety legislation. "In terms of the values that it represents and the regime... (GunPolicy.org)

CALGARY — One of Canada's leading experts on gun control says there are hundreds of thousands more gun owners in this country than Ottawa is willing to admit. Gary Mauser, a criminologist at Simon Fraser University, says the number of owners in a new survey — 2.3 million — is about 400,000 too low. He says Ottawa's survey, released Thursday, doesn't take into account people who would lie about owning a gun. And, he says, one person in a household may not know... (GunPolicy.org)

LUFKIN, Texas — Marital and financial problems may have prompted a man to kill his wife and four children before turning the gun on himself, police said. Neighbors found Lucio Franco, 24, his wife Maria, 21, and their children — age 10 months to 5 years — shot to death in their mobile home outside Lufkin, about 115 miles northeast of Houston. "This is something you just can't comprehend," said neighbor Pedro Sanchez. "We talked about problems with paying bills,... (GunPolicy.org)

Australia's gun laws have had only a marginal effect on reducing firearm-related crime. According to figures in the new Year Book Australia 2001, the proportion of gun-related murders and robberies decreased in 1999, but firearm use increased in attempted murders from 19 percent in 1998 to 32 percent. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures already had shown a steady fall-off in firearm-related deaths since 1980, well before the 1996 Port Arthur massacre which spawned... (GunPolicy.org)
