Strong Response to Australian Gun Amnesty Surprises Police

Police have had a strong response to a weekend gun amnesty held in southern Tasmania.
In the face of a wave of gun thefts across the state, police say there are buoyed by the success.
A total of 99 guns were handed in at a mobile station at Granton, including 34 shotguns, 43 rifles, 17 air rifles and five hand guns.
Detective Acting Inspector Craig Joel says the high number handed in was a surprise.
