Study: Past Misdemeanours Predict Future Crime Risk of Handgun

CHICAGO — Laws barring felons from buying guns should be expanded to ban prospective buyers who have committed misdemeanors, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers found that handgun purchasers with a prior misdemeanor conviction were nearly five times as likely as gun buyers without a criminal record to be charged with new offenses involving firearms or violence.
