Supporters and candidates alike openly displayed high-powered firearms during election campaigns. Anticipating widespread violence, the Papua New Guinea government deployed 13,000 sworn police, reservists, and auxiliaries to cover the elections, and placed 700 members of the PNGDF on standby.
