Through our substantial aid program, Australia is supporting PNG Government efforts to strengthen the PNG law and justice sector. Australia contributes to a range of initiatives in this area, including:

- an urban safety initiative involving a gun surrender programs for youths and former gang members living in illegal, poor, urban settlements, and providing access to alternative means of livelihood
- in 2009, funding is available for the 'Gun Surrender Celebration', which will collect home-made weapons, including from armed youths
- participating communities will be recognised and rewarded for their efforts as 'Gun Free Zones' with appropriate signage on local roads…

In 2009, through the LJSP, the Bougainville Division of Veterans Affairs will receive funding to develop a 'Trauma Strategy' for the region. This strategy is linked to postconflict trauma and will deal primarily with ex-combatants - one of the many groups traumatised by the crisis.
