The NSW government has announced a three-month amnesty for unregistered and unlicensed firearms in a crackdown on gun crime across the state.
But the initiative has been criticised by the opposition and a gun control expert.
Police Minister Tony Kelly said the amnesty would begin on March 1 next year to give those with unregistered guns an opportunity to hand them in to police.

New gun laws described by Premier Mike Rann as the toughest in Australia will come into effect from midnight tonight.
The main target of the new laws are outlaw motorcycle gangs and police will have the power to issue prohibition orders against people found near an illegal weapon or in the company of someone with a weapon.
